.camecuaro.

It’s mind blowing that all of this belonged to my ancestors.

I have always dreamed of taking a road trip through Mexico because there is so much diversity when it comes to, well, everything! I am from a small city in Jalisco called La Barca, which literally translates to “the barge,” a large boat. Isn’t it fascinating? Well, it’s not, but it is about an hour and a half from the Guadalajara airport. Camécuaro is in the neighboring state of Michoacán, about an hour and a half away from La Barca and 3 hours from Guadalajara.

Enough geography.

una cuba - a drink with soda, citrus and everyone's favorite, tequila.

Kenia, my wonderful friend that made this trip memorable and bearable all at the same time.

My mother and my sister. Catalina Rose

On the way to Camécuaro the weather was warm. It wasn’t until we entered through the national park gates that we began to feel a cool breeze. There were a lot of little shops set up on the side of the path leading to the park entrance. Many of the vendors were indigenous selling traditional food and clothes. I will later create a look with a beautiful embroidered blouse I purchased from a cute indigenous couple.

The lake is surrounded by beautiful trees and large roots that sprout from the ground. I think what makes this place so magical is seeing the trees growing out of the lake and contrasting against the beautiful, clear blue water. There were people bathing in the lake, which does not make any sense to me since the water was extremely cold. This trip was a spur of the moment thing and we did not pack any bathing suits.

Looking back, I am glad we did not go prepared because on the way out of the park we were met with a hail storm. We ran into a small hut that belonged to a kind man who quickly became our friend. We chatted while he sold us a few beers when we first arrived. He insisted I looked just like Selena**, but encouraged me to gain a teeny amount of weight, “nomás un centímetro.” “Just one centimeter,” he said.

We waited in his little hut and silently watched as a rainbow emerged from the sky. The hail kept pounding the wooden roof and blanketed the dirt grounds. The lake’s blue water continued to sparkle as the surrounding trees became darker and somehow more enchanted. We decided to drive back to La Barca before the hail ended and drove until the ice-sprinkled roads faded away. It was a huge contrast from when we first arrived, but it was also very beautiful to experience so much during our short visit to Camécuaro.
