.baby steps.

I'm up for the challenge this time.
I really mean it!

I used to be the type of person that went shopping for clothes whenever I had the opportunity. I now cringe at the thought of all the fast-fashion purchases I made in the past and want to formally apologize to my wallet and everyone else involved for the harm I caused. I have been a lot more conscious about the few pieces of clothing I do purchase now, but I often ask myself if it is enough.

The ideal thing would be to completely stop fast-fashion purchases and instead opt for thrifted items, or shop from sustainable brands. I struggle with this so much because it requires more effort compared to opening any shopping app on my phone. I don't have a thrift store near me that I love and we all know that great thrift finds require a lot of time and effort. I know these are weak excuses. Le sigh...

I really love(d?) shopping from H&M because they allow you to recycle clothes you no longer use, but I have read a few reports that have accused them of greenwashing. I mean, how effective is it to have a recycling program and a small sustainable line when they don't improve in all other areas of production? It is also the only brand that I am familiar with that is doing something to help the environment and increasing transparency.

With that said, I would like recommendations on brands, apps, or stores that you shop from that have less of an environmental and ethical impact. I want try to be a better ethical consumer while leaving a smaller ecological footprint, but I don't want to leave my house in order to do it. Please tell me I am not alone in my struggles! Haha.

I'm including some affiliate links below, which you read more about here.
I have really been into cargo pants because of how comfy they are! I originally purchased these khaki pants at Target, but they currently only have them in a really pretty
rose color in sizes xs-2x and in
plus sizes! I wore them with a leopard turtleneck that you can get here and these velvet sock boots (similar here) to emphasize the bagginess. I wasn't sure wether to wear the fur vest, but I ended up getting rid of it because it felt too bulky and I wanted to show off the studs on the denim jacket. To be honest, I am still not sure which style looks best. I love wearing these gold bobby pins from Target because they are curved and they stay in place.

Thank you so much for stopping by. I read and reply to every single comment (unless it's spam), so I appreciate it!

Much Love,
PerlaGiselle

  1. I feel you 100%. I am trying to be better too but it's hard to be 100% good. You buy online, the transport is adding carbon. I don't visit thrift stores as much as I should mainly because I've had bad experiences in the past and have difficulty finding much in my size. I try to buy more sustainable pieces from brands who are actively trying to improve their footprint and thankfully for me the main brand I buy from has started being a lot more transparent and sharing more information about each piece so it's easy to purchase something and not feel guilty. I love H&M's recycling program, though I've opted to purchase from them less often. I try to resell or donate as much as I can though. It feels like all I do is make excuses for myself but baby steps still matter and count. I think actually taking steps towards being sustainable is still something to be proud of as a lot of people just couldn't care less (hence the *need* for brands like H&M to make radicle change is not existent)

  5. Thrifting can be sooo hard!! I feel like I can only count on finding loads of cute finds when I'm out of town, on the coast. Thrift shopping here only results in a few nice bits, usually ages and ages in between discover :') Good luck on these small steps! I admire your efforts x

  7. I'm really loving this whole look, babe! Those pants are a perfect match for those boots. I always love the way baggy pants look with ankle boots or pumps. I, too, have been trying to make more meaningful purchases. I've always been the type that struggles to make decisions on purchasing things because I equally see the negative and positive in everything, lol. That said, I really try to think of the amount of times and outfits I could put together with a specific piece before purchasing. I haven't been as good with this when it comes to shopping for Aviah though. Most of her clothes go to Ariah, so in that sense it's good, but there have been many times I purchase something and she doesn't wear it or only a handful of times. I have to be more conscious all around. So hard when you have girls! Anyway, thanks for bringing up this topic. It's such an important discussion. We can all improve in this area.

  8. I hear you I too am trying to limit if not totally stop shopping fast fashion all together. I may still shop at places like Zara and buy some their more quality pieces but yes doing more pre-loved fashion, renting and being more choosy when buying something new. This past FW for all my looks I shopped my closet and wore many pre-loved pieces. I did buy one new piece a hat that was on sale at Zara for $10.

LOVE this look and that denim jacket with the studs is so cool!

  11. I can totally understand how you feel! All the data that has been coming out recently about fast fashion. It's so hard to have enough outfits to be a blogger, but I don't want to support fast fashion brands either. I have bought stuff from Reformation that I really like, but I can only shop there when their pieces go on sale because they're pretty pricey....

  13. You look soooo great:) Love this outfit soooo much. Those pants rock! And girl....I feel yah. I used to buy from H&M constantly. It was a really habit to break. With my no-buy resolution this year (just for clothes and shoes), it's really forcing me to just re-wear everything, or make them.

  17. I love the mix of edgy and feminine you have going with this look! I get what you mean. It's tough but we all should be more mindful of how and where we shop these days. I'm personally shopping a lot less and opting for quality over quantity. I think fast fashion can still be ok if you stick with classics that you can wear for a long time as opposed to trendy pieces that have a limited life span.

  18. Aaaah Perlita, how you doing?! Hope you're having a good week so far!

First of all don't feel guilty, I think many of us have been in similar situations and nowadays I'm trying to take care of my money in many areas, especially when it comes to get new clothes.... First of all I ask to myself how many combinations I could get with that garment, also try to think if you already have something similar in your closet.

  21. I go inside thrift stores when it comes to artwork and homeware as I can find really cute and valuable items that I can't find anywhere else. As for the outfit, sadly I'm not conscious yet whether fast fashion or not. Although, I find these days to get attracted more to the sustainable brands because they really present their products nicely which of course due to the hefty price it entails. But your post makes me more aware of it which is really good. I like how you did your hair, really pretty! Have a great weekend!

  25. I love the pink and grey together with the pants and boots! :) I agree it's hard to shop sustainable often - I find I have a struggle in high street stores as the kids won't just wait patiently while I shop, so that has slowed my spending down, haha! But it's the same problem in opshops (thrift stores). I usually take a snack when we go there and always go tot he playground first so I can get a bit of a browse in - I'm lucky to have great ones nearby so I've been second hand shopping a lot more. It's easier now the boys are a bit bigger and they can amuse themselves for a bit!

Hope that you are having a great weekend :) We spent the day with my mum yesterday shopping the sales for the leap day (and getting some great toy bargains we've put away for the kids birthdays!)

  26. I totally agree about fast fashion!! I used to be so excited whenever I could shop at Forever21 but have now changed my ways. Cheap doesn't necessarily always correlate to good. I try to shop less now and it's a work in progress.

  36. I used to be like that too, bought whatever I felt like until I had way to stuffed closet and not that many special things. These days the only clothes I got are either from thrift shops, special sales or something I'd made myself. This way I can obtain some really unique pieces that noone else will be wearing for sure and it's so much more exciting :)
